Japanese American Citizens League to Honor Three Community Leaders at 14th Annual Awards Dinner in Long Beach, California Los Angeles - On Saturday, October 9, 2010, the Pacific Southwest District of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) will honor filmmaker Tad Nakamura, social marketing executive Deborah Nakatomi, and activist and educator Iku Kiriyama at its 14th Annual Awards Dinner. In addition, Pacific Southwest District chapters will honor chapter members for their service and commitment to their individual communities. The event will be held at The Grand, in Long Beach, with a reception and dinner. Click here for more information

JACL 2011 Convention in Los Angeles! Los Angeles – The JACL Pacific Southwest District is actively looking for volunteers to assist in the implementation of the exciting 2011 National JACL Convention. The convention, held from July 7-10, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency, Century Plaza will bring out JACL members from across the nation to see our wonderful city of Los Angeles. Our District is looking for active JACL & community members with a variety of skills and available time to help plan the various different facets of our convention. Volunteers will have the opportunity to interface with other community members, connect with the programs and initiatives of our district, as well as be a part of an exciting development for our organization.

2011 JACL Convention to be Hosted by the Pacific Southwest District How many of you remember when the last time JACL hosted a national convention in Los Angeles? It’s been years and much has changed since then. We don’t have smog. The population has grown, there are more freeways but most notably in the Pacific Southwest our leadership is younger and there are more young members in our chapters that are interested in JACL than ever before. Welcoming Summer Interns in the JACL Pacific Southwest District Office! Each year the JACL coordinates several educational internship programs to develop future community advocates. Through working on various summer projects in public policy, youth programming and community preservation our interns gain a rich experience in community building both in the Japanese American and Asian Pacific Islander community. The JACL is proud to host 5 new interns: Becky Perecz, Courtney Sakamoto, Elena Inamine, Todd Kushigemachi and Traci Ishigo. Click here for more information

California Nisei Diploma Project The Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) will implement the California Nisei College Diploma Project (CA Nisei Project), to provide support for Assembly Bill 37, authored by Assembly Member Warren Furutani, that bestows honorary degrees to Japanese American citizens, living or deceased, who were forced to leave their college studies and incarcerated in America's concentration camps during World War II. JACL West Los Angeles Chapter Internship Announcement The West Los Angeles chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) is accepting applicants for its 2010 internship program. The internship is designed to give the participant an opportunity to work with the JACL at the district and chapter levels. The intern will develop leadership, program planning and networking skills while helping the organization carry out its mission of civil rights advocacy.
