About the Nikkei LGBTQ Initiative:
With new leadership this past year in the Pacific Southwest office, the district staff is eager to develop future leaders, as well as move in a direction of addressing social and systemic issues impacting the most vulnerable populations in our diverse AAPI community. The JACL-PSW District is eager to address the various forms of discrimination impacting our Nikkei LGBTQ community. Alongside a core coalition of Los Angeles-based JA LGBTQ community leaders and allies, the JACL-PSW district is making LGBTQ inclusion and justice a top priority.
We envision a thriving Nikkei community that is actively inclusive and safe for all diverse community members, including those who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or other non-conforming gender and sexuality identities.
Through thoughtful educational programming and collective organizing, we aim to create community infrastructure that supports the needs of our Nikkei LGBTQ community members, as well as their family and friends.

Saturday, November 15, 2014
Japanese American National Museum
Okaeri, meaning "welcome home", is a one-day gathering of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning (LGBTQ) individuals, family, and straight allies who seek to find support and resources, as well as connect with others to build movement towards greater inclusion in the Nikkei community. Through educational and storytelling workshops, we believe you will not only walk away with a greater sense of awareness and compassion, but also continue the Nikkei community’s legacy of advancing social justice, this time by undoing the harm of homophobia and transphobia.
Along with a growing coalition of Los Angeles-based community members of Nikkei LGBTQ individuals and allies, the JACL PSW District is proud to organize Okaeri, the first-ever-of-its-kind one day gathering for the Nikkei community.
